Experience an Exotic Mauritius Honeymoon
Want a honeymoon with the tropical paradise feel of Maui, but at a bargain price? Consider Mauritius, part of the Mascarene Island group located in the Southwestern Indian Ocean east of Madagascar just south of the Equator. While you may know little about this volcanic island, its well known for its fine-sand beaches, blue lagoons, lush forests, streams and waterfalls.
If the above description doesn't convince you about a Mauritius honeymoon, consider this quote by Mark Twain in 1897: "You gather the idea that Mauritius was made first, and then heaven; and that heaven was copied after Mauritius."
Mauritius has only two seasons with little differences between them, making Mauritius a perfect honeymoon destination. Summer runs from November to April, with temperatures reaching as high as 93ºF (34ºC) on the coast. Do be aware, however, that cyclones, with strong winds and heavy rain, can occur between January and March.
The temperatures during winter does drop a few degrees, but you will still experience plenty of sunshine to make your honeymoon extremely enjoyable. The peak travel season for Mauritius runs from October to Easter, with hotel prices dropping over the summer months.
If you're English speaking you'll be in fine shape in Mauritius, as English is the official language. Other widely-spoken languages are French, Creole. Hindi, Urdu and Chinese. The official currency of Mauritius is the Mauritian Rupee. Most restaurants, hotels and retailers accept Visa cards.
One caveat about a honeymoon on Mauritius. If you're a gay couple, you're advised to skip Mauritius, as homosexuality is illegal there.
